Gary Andrew Law spent the first few years of his life in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, near the water. The remainder of his childhood took place in Surrey, England. He now resides further south still in Sussex, England. Gary has drawn for as long as he can remember and used to fascinate people by launching straight into very fine detail usually somewhere in the middle of a sheet of paper. He rarely did things in an orthodox manner but surprised people with the results of his endeavours.

He began painting with oils sometime around eleven years of age and became increasingly interested in the number of ways one could apply paint and the various effects that could be achieved with an imaginative mind and hand. He now has paintings and drawings hanging in private collections in Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Poland, Scotland and the USA.

Gary translates mental abstractions and philosophical notions into images tempered by emotion. His art comes from an intuitive need to transport what resides in his head to a painting. He traverses representational and abstract forms with a current preference for abstract and a passion for texture and colour. Both the dark and the vibrant are explored through extensive mixed media. Gary has become a fearless experimenter, combining techniques and materials in unusual ways.

“Many times I see in my mind a fully formed image and I then set about trying to convey that picture to the real world. This happens with music too. I create the piece in my head and attempt to bring it out and make it tangible. Although I’ve always produced rather unusual, even unsettling work, in recent times I’ve been more consciously striving to create texture and colour effects that I’ve never seen before. I am endlessly fascinated by light and dark in nature. Sky and sea are wonderful vistas in which to see all kinds of interactions between light and form. They are both trusty inspirations to me.”

Invisible
MATERIALS

I strive to always use the finest materials I can afford. Paints and inks are professional artists quality with excellent colour, coverage and lightfastness. Surfaces are varied but all of stunning quality. I use both cotton and linen canvases for acrylic and oil work. My mixed media work tends to be made on special surfaces such as synthetic Yupo paper which is a unique non-porous surface or the exceptional Claybords made by Ampersand which offer an amazingly smooth surface similar to the clay gesso grounds used during the Renaissance.

I also use heavyweight watercolour papers from St Cuthberts Mill and Hahnemühle who have been making papers since 1736 and 1584 respectively. Tools are a mixture of traditional and bizarre items. I will use anything if it helps me to get marks made the way I want! I sometimes find myself applying paint with a cocktail stick or a stone.

I use palette knives by Winsor & Newton and beautiful hand-made brushes from Rosemary & Co.

MOUNTING & FRAMING

framingBG

I do not offer fine art framing due to its highly subjective nature and due to the high risk of damage via shipping. Framing should be taken seriously and I recommend you give due consideration to the style and material you would like. In order to protect your work, I recommend that you do not handle the painting directly. Try to ensure that you always use acid-free archival materials to mount your work.
